Just wondering if the O2 mobile broadband worked with the Asus eee PC running Xandros? Anyone tried this yet?

Don't know about Xandros but it can be done in Ubuntu.

Linux installation instructions, see if they work.

plus this additional step

Yup, it's 100% plug and play (MUCH better than windos which does not support the modem at all without additional software (albeit supplied)), all you need is your connection details.......
Username o2bb
password password
number to dial *99#
And the errrm other thing, it might ask for, the name of which eludes me is m-bb.o2.co.uk

Works best of all on my mum (who's 62 and LOVING the "oh-so-tricky" linux)'s EEE 900 under xandros. It's almost unusable (takes like 2 mins after plugged in before you can use it, among other foibles) under windows on my Dell Inspiron, and on an XP based EEE (I actually took it back out of the windows EEE, was sick to death of it going "badoop, I found a device" followed by "deedup, a device has been disconnected" over and over and over....it does that in all versions of DOS I have tried it with, but it takes longer on an EEE), it works OK under Gentoo on the laptop, but MUST be inserted before you boot, whatever I've done wrong, if I hotplug it, it disables itself for a while LOL.

Setup on an Eee pC 1000

Post by DaveLane on Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:12 pm
I can't get as far as the O2 website to buy some time with my Pay As You Go deal.
When I click connect, the log says "CHAP authentication succeeded", but then terminates the connection. According to the "error" file: "failed to run pon. (pppclientservice.cpp: 1012) The link was closed. Unable to reach destination ...."

Anyone any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Perhaps I haven't set the configuration up correctly.

Did a Google search on this and it would appear that loads of people on a number of networks around the globe have had the same issue. It appears to be related to a mode switching issue with Xandros and the E160.

This thread http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=37512 has a lot of useful advice although I hope you know what you are doing in linux if you intend to follow some of it.

You can try the drivers here http://www.betavine.net/bvportal/web/linux_drivers which are from Vodafone and for the E220 (which is basically the same device) but apparently have worked for people with the E160. You'll have to update the APN to the O2 Pay&Go one m-bb.o2.co.uk

OR

1. Install eee Ubuntu
2. Then upgrading the network manager to v0.7 (not part of the standard repositories - check the Ubuntu forum for details)
3. Then following ubuntu forum details for rewriting the chatscript for network manager - the script is the same as for the e220
